About 50 supporters of the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday surrounded the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon and the former Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, in Tahrir Square in Cairo, and forced them to abandon the symbolic place of the revolt antiMubarak, AFP journalists found at the scene.
Shouting "Down with USA" and waving flags of the Libyan regime, protesters surrounded the UN delegation that included 15 people, including Ban and Bachelet, president of the UN entity Women, and forced to seek refuge in neighboring Arab League headquarters.
Police had to intervene to allow the delegation to leave the central Tahrir Square.
Soon after, Ban's convoy was caught in another demonstration in the square, this time hundreds of Egyptians who were demanding jobs, housing and a better life.
Amid the disorder, the police and the army forced the crowd back to allow the passage of the convoy.
The UN secretary general had come to visit the Tahrir Square, the epicenter of popular protests that led to the downfall of President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February.
This visit is usually carried out by several international personalities who recently traveled to Cairo, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
